Cannabis advocates expect new york gov. Andrew Cuomo to call on the Legislature to legalize recreational cannabis during his first budget address in 2019, reports NBC News.
“We’re drafting legislation,” said Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for the governor.
Cuomo earlier this year launched a working group to make legislative recommendations based on a study on “regulated marijuana” unveiled in July. The study concluded, “The positive effects of a regulated marijuana market in New York State outweighs the potential negative impacts.”
“There’s a lot of hope for it in the legislative session,” said Kassandra Frédérique, New York State director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “We’re ready with a checklist to hold them accountable.”
