Each month, the Oregon Leaf crew meets to select one special budtender that stands out above the rest! Tell us who you think should be the next Oregon Leaf Budtender of the Month and why they deserve it!
First cannabis experience?
The very first time I smoked Cannabis, I was 14, and friends with a girl who had recently found and used a pipe in her parent’s room. I was curious and told her I wanted to try it, and we smoked out of that tiny metal pipe and zoned out to MTV until we fell asleep. I remember it being hazy and pleasant, and coughing a whole lot—at one point declaring, “I can’t tell if I’m asleep or if I’m dreaming!” After that, I started buying my own bud. When I was 17, I started smoking regularly.
How long have you been part of the cannabis industry and what is your favorite aspect of the job?
Since the Cannabis industry is so new, many of us haven’t been involved for as long as you might think. There are so many aspects to this job that I enjoy, but I’d say my favorite part is the rewarding feeling of helping customers find the product that they need.
I love helping people who haven’t slept well in years or who are dealing with chronic pain or anxiety, and are desperately seeking some help. Cannabis is a miracle for these folks and that is just amazing.
How do you like to consume cannabis?
Oh, I definitely prefer smoking flower. I dig edibles, but only in certain circumstances when I know I’ve got nothing to do for a while. I prefer to smoke joints, but I also like smoking a good old fashioned spliff, mixing some herb with a bit of organic tobacco.I’m also a big fan of hash oil pens, I love having a discreet option for daytime use that I can keep in my pocket.
What are some of your favorite Cannabis strains and effects?
I’ve always thought of myself as a sativa girl, but after working a while in the industry I’ve found that I really like the nuanced effects of hybridized strains. I always like well-grown Jack Herer or Black Widow, but as of recently I’ve been more inclined toward something more in the 70 to 30%-split range favoring indica-like effects. That way, I can relax but not necessarily fall asleep.
My favorite terpenes are limonene and pinene, so I tend to gravitate toward those sorts of profiles.
How do you help customers find the best Cannabis or products for them?
Well, I usually try to ask them what they’re interested in using the strain for. Are they trying to alleviate pain, or maybe dealing with anxiety or depression? I’d suggest a strain like Trainwreck or a Sour Diesel. Looking to sleep better or relax at the end of a long day? I’d suggest something more heady on the indica side like Granddaddy Purple or something with those berry or lavender terpenes. Maybe even one with a high CBD percentage to really solidify that good night’s sleep
Do you put much faith in THC or CBD percentages to convey a strain’s effects?
I do not believe that testing requirements are always an accurate indication of how high you will be, but they’re a decent jumping off point. I have had flower that tested at 17 percent that got me way higher than something that tested at 22 percent, so the percentages aren’t always the best indicator of effect. I think for the people who might be using it to alleviate any symptoms that can be treated using CBD, it’s important to include the percentages so that they can find what works for them. But like any product, I encourage people to do their own research and find their own testimonials to help narrow down their searches.
What differentiates Little Amsterdam’s approach to customer service?
Maybe I’m biased, but I’ve been a loyal customer here long before I was hired for a job. I always listen when I’m with the more seasoned budtenders in my shop, since they have a great wealth of knowledge about a variety of products and benefits of Cannabis. I am always learning from the people around me, researching and accumulating testimonials from customers to use in the future. When you’ve been to a wellness center like ours—where people really know what they’re talking about and can answer questions intelligently—it makes a huge difference in your shop experience.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of the cannabis industry?
I am a musician. I write, play and sing music for my band, No Damsel. We try to play around Portland regularly, but I make it a point to try and write new stuff all the time. I also love spending time with my kitties and experimenting in the kitchen.
