With its long history and culture of fine Cannabis growers, the Eugene area continues to produce products that make other larger cities in the Pacific Northwest envious. That’s why it’s important for any Cannabis connoisseur – no matter where they live – to make the trek to Eugene every now and then. While it may not be the flashiest shop in town, Eugene OG makes up for it with fantastic products difficult to find anywhere else, and with great customer service. Hands down, Sally, our first Budtender of the Month of 2020, is a huge part of what makes this shop truly great.

How did you first experience Cannabis?

My first experience with Cannabis was in my freshman year of high school. I had only lived in Oregon for almost a year at that point. I was super nervous, but mostly excited to get high for the first time. It was a classic case of the older kids offering a bowl to a younger kid – who insists they have smoked before – only for the sake of observing a totally stoned noob. So, in my attempt to be accepted and to rebel in my teenage angst, I started my more than decade long journey with Cannabis.

How long have you been a budtender? What’s your favorite part of the job?

I started budtending around two-and-a-half years ago. Some of my more rewarding moments at work come when a patient or consumer walks out of the shop with a full, comprehensive understanding of a product that we’ve found will be most effective for their personal needs. Hearing positive customer feedback on a product that I’ve recommended is easily my favorite part of my job. Nothing beats having a positive effect on someone’s livelihood.

Favorite method for consuming Cannabis?

Smoking flower and eating edibles are my tried and true ways. A solid beaker-bottom bong rip with a heady chug has me feeling blissful after a long day. And when it comes to pain management, I’ve found the most relief from consuming full spectrum edibles.

What are some of your favorite strains, effects and terpene profiles?

Platinum Huckleberry Cookies, Tropic Heat, East Coast Sour Diesel, and Durban Chocolope. There are too many terps to choose from! I like a nice balance and blend, but I lean towards strains heavier in myrcene, caryophyllene, limonene and pinene. With that, I typically look for three different effects in the flower I smoke – the sedating and heavy body high, the relaxed/giggly/social high, and then the uplifting/creative/productive high.

How do you find the right strains for a customer? What effect are you looking for? How often do you smoke? What flavor profiles call to you? I listen to the customer’s needs. The staff at OG are constantly searching for new information, whether that pertains to new terpene studies, CBD studies, or updates on the vape ban. We share articles [in-house] to educate ourselves and our customers. Most of our staff have gone through a CBD certification course. Sampling products and comparing results amongst one another is also vital for comprehensive analysis.

Do you put much faith in THC or CBD percentages?

I do take the percentages with a grain of salt, yet looking at testing percentages can really make the difference in someone’s high, especially with high CBD ratios. Terpenes are responsible for the different effects of a Cannabis high. I think as an industry, it’s now our responsibility to educate consumers about terpenes’ role in the plant. We provide as much hands-on information as possible in the shop, then offer take-home information for deeper consideration. With education, we see [less] looking for the highest THC and [more] looking for terpene rich flower.

What sets EUGENE OG apart?

We aim to make our customers feel comfortable, but also make them feel like part of our team. Our honesty, thoroughness, and genuine care and curiosity for our customers is revered by our regulars. We’re always looking for new ways to make the experience fun at our shop – activities that get our customers excited and looking forward to something new.

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside the Cannabis industry?

I love both creating and appreciating visual art, going to live music shows,
and trying new food.
